Wakhan Corridor Expedition

Overview

An immersive journey through Afghanistan’s remote Wakhan Corridor and the towering Pamirs. This 15-day expedition takes travelers along ancient Silk Road paths, through high valleys, alpine rivers, and isolated villages rarely seen by outsiders. From the bustling streets of Kabul to the frontier town of Ishkashim, and deep into the high Pamirs at Chaqmaqtin Lake, visitors witness Wakhi and Kyrgyz communities living in harmony with a harsh but breathtaking landscape. Along the way, the journey offers dramatic mountain vistas, turquoise lakes, nomadic camps, and the quiet rhythm of life at the edge of the map.

Itinerary

Day 1 | Arrival in Kabul

Arrive in Kabul, the historic capital of Afghanistan, where centuries of history meet the rhythm of daily life. After meeting our local team, you will be transferred to your hotel. You will be given an Afghan outfit to blend with the local culture. The rest of the day is gentle, allowing time to recover from travel. In the evening, enjoy a quiet dinner or a short stroll to glimpse local bakeries, bustling streets, and the charm of Kabul’s urban life.

Depart early and travel north across the Hindu Kush, passing through the dramatic Salang Pass with its snow-capped peaks and deep gorges. Continue through Kapisa, Parwan, and Baghlan, where rural villages and terraced fields line the road. Arrive in Kunduz in the evening, ready to rest after a day of scenic travel.

Journey east into Badakhshan, a region of deep valleys and winding rivers. Along the way, observe terraced farmlands, scattered villages, and rivers flowing through the mountains. On arrival in Faizabad, complete local travel permits before enjoying a stroll through the small town streets, riverside areas, and markets.

Depart Faizabad and travel through Baharak and Warduj, where the landscape gradually shifts from gentle hills to steeper mountain valleys. Arrive in Ishkashim, a frontier town on the banks of the Panj River, a historic hub for traders and travelers. Spend time observing village life and the river scenery.

Today, enter the heart of the Wakhan Corridor, following ancient trade and migration routes. Stop in Khandud for registration before continuing to Qala-e-Panja, where the mountains begin to rise dramatically. Along the way, notice the stone-built Wakhi homes, grazing livestock, and the quiet rhythm of life in remote villages. Experience local hospitality in a homestay. Overnight in Qala-e-Panja.

Venture deeper into the corridor, traveling past alpine rivers, small hamlets, and mountain meadows. Pause at Abgharch Waterfall, where clear water cascades amid the rugged terrain. Arrive in Sarhad-e-Broghil, the last permanent settlement before the high Pamirs, and enjoy the village atmosphere and natural hot springs. Overnight in Sarhad-e-Broghil.

Ascend gradually into the Pamir Highlands, where vast plateaus stretch to distant peaks. Reach Lake Chaqmaqtin, a remote turquoise lake embraced by mountains. Visit Kyrgyz nomadic settlements, witnessing seasonal life at high altitude, and explore nearby valleys such as Wakhjir and Tigermansou. Overnight in Lake Chaqmaqtin (camp or homestay).

Spend the day exploring the lake and surrounding high-altitude wilderness. Walk along the shoreline, observe wildlife such as Marco Polo sheep and marmots, and visit natural hot springs. The silence and scale of the Pamirs create a rare sense of remoteness. Overnight at Lake Chaqmaqtin (camp).

Return across the open plains to Sarhad-e-Broghil, retracing the high-altitude route. The afternoon is free to relax, enjoy the hot springs, and absorb the quiet rhythm of village life. Overnight in Sarhad-e-Broghil.

Drive west through the corridor, pausing to capture the villages, rivers, and grazing animals against the backdrop of towering mountains. Arrive at Qala-e-Panja in the evening. Overnight in Qala-e-Panja.

Return to Ishkashim, visiting Qazida Village and the remains of pre-Islamic fortress ruins. Explore Ishkashim Bazaar and observe local trade, crafts, and daily life along the river. Overnight in Ishkashim.

Drive back to Faizabad, following valleys and rivers. The afternoon is at leisure for walking, photography, or exploring small local markets. Overnight in Faizabad.

Travel west to Kunduz, enjoying familiar landscapes with a fresh perspective. The route passes villages, fields, and river crossings, offering final glimpses of northern Afghan life. Overnight: Kunduz

Cross the Salang Pass again, returning to Kabul in the evening. Time to rest and reflect on the journey through remote Afghanistan. Overnight in Kabul.

Transfer to the airport for onward travel. If time allows, enjoy a last stroll through Kabul’s streets or purchase local handicrafts. Depart with memories of the Wakhan Corridor, the Pamirs, and Afghanistan’s remote communities.
